The 2026 State of Web Dev AI survey, which collected insights from over 7,000 software developers, highlights a significant shift in AI tool adoption and concerns within the industry. Data indicates that the proportion of code produced by AI tools has increased to 54% in 2026, up from 28% in 2025. Furthermore, the share of developers reporting constant use of AI for coding or refactoring tasks rose from 11% to 21% over the same period.
Claude Code, a tool for agentic coding (autonomous systems that perform tasks step-by-step), has emerged as a leader in developer preference. Among surveyed developers, 62.9% have used Claude Code, placing it behind GitHub Copilot but ahead of OpenAI Codex, which holds 34.5% usage. The data also suggests that developers are more likely to pay for Anthropic’s offerings than OpenAI’s products, marking a notable shift in market adoption among technical professionals.
Despite increased productivity, developers are reporting growing anxiety regarding the long-term implications of these technologies. Survey respondents identified job security as a primary concern, a sentiment echoed by recent industry developments such as staff reductions at Meta. Beyond economic uncertainty, developers cited the military application of AI and the environmental impact of large-scale datacenters as significant risks. While the current adoption rate of AI-driven workflows remains high, the survey suggests a cautious outlook, with many developers expressing skepticism about whether the overall benefits of rapid AI integration outweigh the associated societal and professional risks.
