The organization insists that systems must be strictly prohibited from masquerading as licensed clinicians, a practice they deem deceptive and dangerous. The debate touches on a critical limitation of modern large language models (LLMs). While these models are impressive at providing answers, recent research from Mass General Brigham reveals a significant performance gap. While LLMs could identify a final diagnosis correctly over 90% of the time, they struggled mightily with the process of differential diagnosis—the systematic comparison of different conditions—failing over 80% of the time. This finding reinforces the medical consensus that AI should serve as an assistant to human clinicians rather than a replacement for their diagnostic judgment.
