- •Legal experts project full automation of many white-collar tasks within 12 to 18 months.
Anthropic launched expanded legal tools for its Claude Cowork platform on May 12, 2026, enabling law firms to automate complex legal tasks through integrated software. The update connects directly to databases and platforms including Westlaw, CourtListener, Definely, Courtroom5, Box, and the Harvey AI platform. These new tools allow legal professionals to perform deep research, manage contracts, and access case law databases within a single unified interface.
Unlike the initial February launch of Cowork, which triggered a significant market sell-off, these specific tools are tailored for practice areas like employment, privacy, and product law. This announcement follows Anthropic's earlier introduction of Claude Code Security, an automated system capable of scanning codebases for vulnerabilities and recommending patches. The company is also expanding its broader enterprise presence, recently releasing a beta version of Claude for Word, which integrates across Microsoft Office applications.
The adoption of these technologies carries significant implications for the legal industry. Chief Justice John Roberts noted that AI can now allow a partner to review a statute in three minutes, a process that previously required a junior associate several days to complete. Microsoft AI chief Mustafa Suleyman has projected that most white-collar and legal tasks could see full automation within 12 to 18 months. Demand for these capabilities is high, with more than 20,000 professionals registering for a recent webinar held by the company regarding its legal technology offerings.
