Google announced Android 17 on May 13, 2026, featuring deeper integration of its Gemini AI assistant into core device functions and operating-system controls. The update introduces a premium feature layer termed “Gemini Intelligence,” which will be available initially on newer Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices. These enhancements allow Gemini to automate tasks across third-party applications and provide multimodal support, permitting users to combine screenshots, images, and text prompts for task requests. Users can also leverage Gemini within the Chrome browser to query webpage information and automate browsing activities. Additionally, the “Create My Widget” tool enables the generation of custom mobile interface layouts using natural-language prompts.
The Android 17 update targets content creators with improved media processing pipelines designed to maintain photo and video quality during social media uploads. Specifically, the software adds Ultra HDR support for Instagram and integrates built-in stabilization and night-mode features directly into the app. Partnerships are further expanding the creative suite, with Adobe Premiere confirmed for Android launch later this year. New AI-assisted tools include Screen Reactions for simplified reaction-video recording, alongside functions for audio separation and automated enhancement. Android tablet versions of Instagram are also in development through a collaboration with Meta.
Google is simultaneously introducing security and wellbeing features, including “Pause Point,” which uses countdown timers and alternative activity suggestions to reduce compulsive app usage. Enhanced anti-scam protections target fraudulent bank-impersonating calls, while new security measures include behavioral malware detection and stricter biometric locking controls for lost hardware. Interoperability remains a priority, with expanded Quick Share functionality for AirDrop-style transfers across more manufacturers and WhatsApp. The company is also streamlining data migration from iPhones to Android, covering passwords, contacts, and messages, while continuing to expand encrypted RCS messaging support between the two ecosystems.
Beyond smartphones, Google introduced the Googlebook platform, a high-end device category merging Android and ChromeOS technologies. These devices focus on cross-device continuity, allowing users to access applications from connected Android phones without needing separate downloads on the laptop. Major hardware partners, including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, are expected to release Googlebook hardware later this year to compete in the evolving AI-powered ecosystem market.
