A legacy system might rely on batch-processed data that is hours or days old, but an AI agent attempting to reroute a shipment in real-time needs immediate, granular inputs. While legacy tools like Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) remain necessary for standard transactions, they are being augmented by modern Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and continuous event streaming architectures. These modern tools allow systems to react to specific triggers—such as a temperature excursion or a sudden customs clearance—as they happen. The goal is to build an environment where AI assistants can access, retrieve, and interpret operational context seamlessly across functional boundaries.
Ultimately, the most successful companies will be those that treat interoperability as a core pillar of their data governance strategy. This means enforcing strict consistency in how products, locations, and partners are defined across every internal system. Without this level of discipline, organizations will find that their AI pilots perform well in isolation but fail to deliver value in complex, real-world execution.
