US President Donald Trump announced that he no longer classifies the AI company Anthropic or its CEO, Dario Amodei, as national security threats. This declaration follows high-level discussions between Anthropic leadership and the administration aimed at addressing concerns regarding foreign access to advanced AI models. These tensions culminated on June 12 when the US Commerce Department issued an emergency export-control directive, which forced the company to temporarily restrict access to its sophisticated models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, for foreign nationals.

Administration officials previously expressed concern that foreign actors might bypass security protocols to identify software vulnerabilities or misuse powerful AI features. In response to the June 12 directive, Anthropic implemented broader security measures, which Trump described as acting "very quickly" and "responsibly." The president’s change in stance followed meetings at the G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains, France, where Amodei and representatives from Google DeepMind advocated for a US-led international AI coalition. While Trump signaled an easing of current restrictions, he maintained that he retains the authority to intervene under the Defence Production Act if future security risks emerge, noting, "I have the power to use a lot of things, but I'm not sure I have to do that."
