AI Agent Payments: A Seller’s Guide to Product Information and Pricing

What if your customer’s AI compared products and decided what to buy before the customer ever visited your website? An AI agent is AI that finds information and carries out tasks to achieve a goal someone has assigned to it. AI agent payments let this AI participate in the purchasing process and make payments within the permissions and approval procedures it has been given.

Sellers need to appeal to people while also making prices and terms clear enough for AI to read accurately. Drawing on an interview with Emily Sands, head of data and AI at payment services provider Stripe, and official materials, this article first looks at the product information and payment terms sellers should review. It also covers pricing and costs to consider when selling or adopting AI services.

Product Information AI Can Compare

Start by reviewing the information for one of your best-selling products. Give its URL to an AI that can read public product pages and ask: “Using only evidence on this page, identify any missing information needed to compare this product with others.” If the AI cannot read the page, paste in the publicly available product description. Then have the person responsible check the results against your actual sales terms.

Photos and descriptions such as “premium” or “great value” are not enough to determine whether a product meets a customer’s needs. Materials, dimensions, price, stock availability, delivery areas, estimated arrival dates, and return conditions need to be specific.

The following is a hypothetical example for reviewing product information. The amounts are illustrative, not actual prices or currency conversions; USD is used only as an example currency. Adapt the currency, tax treatment, and shipping terms to your own products and market.

Stripe also offers a way to send current prices and stock levels to AI platforms through a product catalog: a list that organizes information about each product into consistent fields. Even before considering this kind of integration, you can fix prices shown only in images and outdated delivery information. The starting point is to make sure customers and AI read the same sales terms.

AI Agent Payments and Approval Limits

In the interview, Sands explains that people are beginning to delegate purchases to AI for low-cost, low-risk products whose quality they already know. Sellers remain responsible for delivery, returns, and customer support after receiving an order. Even when AI is involved in payment, it must be possible to verify who authorized the order and exactly what they allowed.

Stripe’s Shared Payment Token (SPT) provides limited payment authorization that lets an agent make a payment without seeing the actual card details. Its use can be restricted by seller, amount, and validity period, among other conditions.

Link, Stripe’s payment wallet service, currently instructs users to check the amount and approve each payment request from an agent. It describes more detailed controls, such as setting spending limits that allow payments without further approval, as upcoming features. SPT’s transaction-specific restrictions and Link’s automatic spending settings should not be treated as the same feature.

Companies using AI for purchasing should first specify the permitted items, budget, suppliers, and person responsible for approval. Whether to let the AI buy a substitute when office supplies are out of stock or require it to ask again is a separate decision. Sellers should also clearly explain their policies for suggesting substitutes, changing orders, cancellations, and returns.

The Machine Payments Protocol (MPP) is also relevant to companies selling software or data. This open payment protocol, coauthored by Stripe and Tempo, supports a process in which agents check payment terms for paid features and pay to use them. Integrating through Stripe requires a Stripe account and profile, development work, and a supported payment method, such as SPT-based card payments or stablecoins. Stablecoins are digital assets designed to track the value of a reference asset, such as the US dollar.

Availability depends on your business location and the payment method. Stripe’s published SPT country list covers the United States, Canada, and selected European countries. For stablecoin payments through Stripe’s MPP integration, businesses outside the United States must request access, and enabling the payment method requires Stripe’s review and approval. An application is not a guarantee of eligibility. Check the requirements for your own business before integrating; general Stripe availability does not mean every agent-payment feature is available. You can start improving product information while checking these conditions.

AI Service Pricing and Actual Costs

If you sell AI features, your pricing needs to reflect the costs that rise with usage. When usage varies widely between customers but everyone pays the same monthly fee, greater use can reduce profitability.

Stripe’s token billing documentation describes usage-based billing, flat-rate plans with included usage, prepaid credits, and hybrid pricing. A token is a unit into which AI breaks text for processing; it is not always equivalent to one character. Credits are units customers purchase in advance and draw down as they use a service. This token billing feature is in public preview and requires an account with Metronome, a usage-based billing service.

Customers need to know what the base fee includes, what extra usage costs, and when cost alerts or usage cutoffs apply. Pricing should be sustainable for the seller and give customers confidence about what they will pay.

If you charge based on outcomes, both sides need a shared definition of a result such as “one customer inquiry resolved.” You need to agree whether sending a reply counts as resolution and what happens if the customer contacts you again.

When Stripe announced its agreement to acquire OpenRouter on August 19, 2026, it also emphasized managing revenue and AI costs together. When building or adopting an AI service, look beyond the monthly subscription fee to the total cost of completing an actual work task. A realistic comparison adds retries, external tools, and human review time to model usage fees.

Measuring AI’s Impact and the Human Role

Sands says the data Stripe observes does not yet show AI spending replacing existing software service costs, and it is also unclear whether AI is replacing labor costs. This is Stripe’s observation, not a conclusion that can be applied to the entire labor market.

Evaluate the impact of AI adoption against the task you assign it. For product descriptions, measure the time needed for checking and editing as well as draft generation. For customer support, look at resolution rates and the proportion of repeat inquiries alongside the number of replies. If the goal is to develop new products, the value delivered to customers and revenue potential are also important measures.

Sands says she would like to delegate chores such as grocery shopping, but not the care and thought that go into choosing a gift. Businesses can similarly automate repetitive data entry and comparisons while giving people a deeper role in listening to customers’ circumstances and judging final quality. A seller’s competitive strength comes from information AI can read easily, together with products and service that customers trust and return for.

What can we do faster with AI, and what will keep customers choosing us?

One task is enough to start. Review the information for a key product, then write down which steps AI can handle, the costs you will allow, where people need to make decisions, and the records you will use to check results. Clear information, costs, and decision criteria for your business make it possible to assess the results of automation.
