LG AI Research is the dedicated AI research hub of LG Group, founded in December 2020 and headquartered in Seoul. It develops the EXAONE family of foundation models and is one of the four elite teams selected for the Korean government sovereign AI foundation model project.

In 2026, K-EXAONE took first place in 10 of 13 benchmarks in the first-stage evaluation of the national project (average score 72, the highest among participants), and LG followed up by releasing K-EXAONE 2.0 — a 750B-parameter model, the largest in Korea — as open weights. K-EXAONE became the first Korean model to enter the global top 10 open-weight rankings (7th) on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index.
