AI Avatar, a free application that allows 3D VRM-format avatars to animate in response to chat and user inputs, released version 15 for VS Code and Chrome. The latest update centers on four major improvements: new visual effects, text-to-speech (TTS) integration, 3D animations, and contextual messaging. The app maintains a mission to support developer productivity through interactive character responses.
Collaborator RutenVeil introduced a new visual effects system consisting of six themes, including Idol Stage, Sci-Fi, and Cyber. The design utilizes a layered structure similar to Photoshop to establish depth, while a timeline-based CSS animation system manages complex motion states like fade-ins and loops without requiring heavy processing. To ensure performance stability, static positioning and dynamic animations are now strictly separated into independent CSS classes, resolving previous conflicts in property priority.
The update adds four distinct TTS options for vocal responses. Gemini TTS provides high-quality speech but is limited to 10 uses per day on the free tier, while the Web Speech API offers an unlimited but robotic-sounding alternative. For more natural, albeit locally demanding, speech, the update integrates Kokoro for English and VOICEVOX for Japanese. Additionally, new entertainment features include a Millionaire Mode, which simulates fountain-style coin or diamond effects, and a Rollercoaster Mode powered by Three.js that allows avatars to traverse virtual tracks.
Contextual messaging now enables the avatar to alter its interactions based on factors such as time of day, holiday status, or the length of a user's session. The app prioritizes these messages by importance, ensuring the character provides relevant feedback throughout the day. Minor adjustments to idle animations and new default character personality presets—Cute, Energetic, and Cool—were also included. Developers and users can currently access the application via the VS Code Marketplace or the Chrome Web Store.
