Amazon launched general availability for Web Search on Amazon Bedrock AgentCore on June 17, 2026. This fully managed tool allows AI agents to ground their responses in current, cited web information while ensuring data security by preventing egress from a customer's AWS environment. The system utilizes the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a standardized communication protocol for AI applications, to connect agents with live web data. Users can query the service using natural language, receiving snippets, source URLs, titles, and publication dates to reason over for grounded, verified responses.
The service is built on Amazon’s proprietary search infrastructure, which incorporates both a web index and the Amazon Knowledge Graph. This multi-source approach enables agents to access verified facts beyond the model's original training data. By using the Bedrock AgentCore Gateway, developers can avoid manual infrastructure management for web search integration. The tool is designed to meet strict enterprise governance policies by keeping all user prompts and retrieval queries within the secure AWS perimeter, avoiding the need for external search API providers.
To implement Web Search, developers create a Bedrock AgentCore Gateway through the management console and select the Web Search tool as a preconfigured connector target. Interaction is possible via API, Command Line Interface (CLI), or the MCP Inspector, an interactive tool for testing and debugging. Sample invocation code is provided for Python-based environments. Early adopters include Benchling, which uses the tool to ground scientific research in published literature, and Gen Digital, which utilizes the search capability for content creation in its Norton Revamp service.
The feature is currently available in the US East (N. Virginia) Region. There is no additional cost for the Web Search tool itself; customers only incur charges for data transfer associated with the Gateway. New AWS customers may apply up to $200 in Free Tier credits toward usage costs. Documentation, setup guides, and feedback channels are available through the Amazon Bedrock AgentCore portal and the AWS re:Post community forum.
