Amazon Blocks Meta Muse Purchases
- •Amazon blocked Meta’s Muse from buying products on Amazon.com for users.
- •Amazon cited a lack of advance notice and AI identification, plus privacy and security concerns over credentials.
- •Meta says Muse confirms purchases first; Amazon also offers “Buy for Me” for purchases on external brand sites.
Amazon blocked Meta’s personal AI agent Muse from buying products on Amazon.com on users’ behalf. GeekWire reported on September 20, 2026, local time, that Amazon had asked Meta to voluntarily exclude Amazon from Muse, but the request was not fulfilled.
According to Amazon’s account reported by GeekWire, Meta did not notify Amazon in advance that Muse would access its store, and Muse did not identify itself as an AI agent while browsing. Amazon also raised privacy and security concerns about the collection and storage of customers’ credentials. It said third-party apps that buy products from other companies for customers should operate transparently and respect service providers’ right to decide whether to participate. At the time GeekWire published its report, Meta had not responded to the outlet’s request for comment.
Meta announced Muse on September 8, local time. The agent can send emails, book travel and shop on users’ behalf. It can open a browser and fill in forms, and continue time-consuming tasks after the app is closed. Muse asks users to confirm before important actions, including purchases and sending emails.
Meta said in its official announcement that Muse cannot see passwords or payment information themselves, and that credentials are stored in protected storage. It said Muse uses credentials without directly viewing their contents. A technical document on its safety design says Muse’s execution environment is separated from credential-handling functions, while an independent component called Sentinel controls permissions for external actions and communications. That was a description of the design at launch, not a response to Amazon’s current objections.
Amazon also offers “Buy for Me,” which handles purchases on external brand websites. After users confirm an order in Amazon’s shopping app, AI completes the purchase process on the brand’s site. Amazon says the feature is designed to operate transparently with users and brands, and lets brands choose whether to participate. An article dated September 28, 2026, reported Amazon’s request that Meta provide transparency and respect service providers’ choice to participate. Amazon says its own purchasing feature follows the same principles.
