AMD Senior Vice President Keith Strier, who leads global AI markets, is scheduled to visit the office of Im Mun-young, a Democratic Party lawmaker, at the National Assembly on the 3rd to discuss cooperation in AI and semiconductors. Industry sources said on the 2nd that the agenda includes AMD investment and cooperation tied to three major projects: semiconductors, Physical AI, and AI data centers. The talks may clarify whether plans for an AI research center in Gwangju will take shape.

The visit follows Im’s proposal to AMD CEO Lisa Su on the 7th of last month to establish an AI research and innovation center in Gwangju. In a personal letter, Im proposed setting up an AMD AI research hub in the city and having domestic AI semiconductor companies, the Gwangju Institute for Artificial Intelligence Industry Convergence (AICA), and the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) conduct research and testing together.

Im’s plan is to combine Gwangju’s semiconductor megaprojects and AI infrastructure with AMD’s computing technology to create a growth hub for the next generation of the AI semiconductor industry. He said Gwangju has potential to bring AMD technology together with domestic AI semiconductor innovation, and that he would seek national policy and budget support and cooperation to produce practical results.

Earlier, on the 7th of last month, Su met with Ryu Je-myeong, second vice minister at the Ministry of Science and ICT, and outlined plans to establish an AMD Center of Excellence (CoE) for AI research in South Korea. Im also met Su at the time, alongside Ha Jung-woo, vice chair of the National AI Strategy Committee, to discuss expanding AI infrastructure and cooperation on regional AI transformation.

Strier oversees AMD’s global AI strategy and public-private partnerships. He previously led national AI cooperation initiatives as vice president for global AI initiatives at Nvidia. He has also served as a founding member of the U.S. National AI Advisory Committee (NAIAC) and co-chair of the OECD AI Computing Expert Group.
