AMIE Shows Clinical Video Consultation Capabilities
- •Google Research and Google DeepMind advance AMIE toward real-time clinical video consultations
- •Randomized simulated study compares AMIE with primary care physicians and patient actors
- •Clinical evaluators rate AMIE favorably; patient actors prefer video experience over text chat
Google Research and Google DeepMind said on Aug 11, 2026 that AMIE, a research medical AI system, demonstrated real-time clinical video consultation capabilities in a first-of-its-kind study. Built on Gemini and Project Astra with a multi-agent architecture (several AI agents coordinating tasks), AMIE interprets visual and auditory cues, guides virtual physical exams, and reasons diagnostically during video consultations.
In a randomized study, AMIE was tested in simulated consultations with patient actors and a group of primary care physicians. Clinical evaluators rated AMIE favorably across history-taking thoroughness, diagnostic accuracy, management appropriateness, and communication quality. Patient actors also preferred AMIE’s video experience over text chat.
Google said AMIE remains a research system and needs more research before responsible real-world clinical deployment.
