Anthropic Acquires One-Person Biotech Mithril
  • •Anthropic disclosed its July acquisition of Cambridge biotech Mithril Medicine last week
  • •Founder Cody Tranbarger used Claude and 11 outside labs to reach promising mouse results in under 18 months
  • •Anthropic reported $33 billion revenue in 2026’s first nine months, up roughly 1,200% year over year

Anthropic acquired Mithril Medicine, a Cambridge biotech developing treatments for two rare forms of muscular dystrophy, in a deal completed in July and disclosed by Anthropic last week. Mithril had no website and one employee: founder and CEO Cody Tranbarger, who worked from investor Atlas Venture’s Kendall Square offices. Using Claude, he handled contracts, logistics and experiments with 11 outside labs, while handing much of the company’s other operational work to AI. Mithril advanced a potential treatment from an idea to promising results in mice in under 18 months. Anthropic says it hopes to have a drug enter human clinical trials in 2028.

Anthropic calls the one-person setup its “Pipeline-in-a-Person research model”: one person potentially using Claude to develop several candidate medicines at once. Biotech entrepreneur and Beth Israel Deaconess physician Stephen Linderman said the deal gives Anthropic a way to test how AI agents can help a small team manage parallel workflows. He welcomed the prospect of faster development but cautioned that disease biology remains poorly understood and that ideas still need experimental validation, reliable manufacturing, and clinical evidence of safety and efficacy. Ananya Zutshi, another local life sciences entrepreneur, said AI could help small startups challenge assumptions about drug development, while noting that bringing medicines to market could give Anthropic a pharmaceutical revenue stream alongside sales of AI tools.

Anthropic remains unprofitable, but reported $33 billion in revenue in the first nine months of 2026, up roughly 1,200% from the same period a year earlier. Its initial public offering could be the largest ever, surpassing SpaceX’s July IPO, which raised $86 billion. Anthropic set up its first local outpost in Cambridge’s Central Square, MassLive reported in January, and said in September it would lease a larger Kendall Square space. Co-founder Daniela Amodei said Cambridge researchers were using Claude to accelerate life sciences work. Anthropic also partnered with Cambridge startup Generate Biomedicines, which is using Claude to explore ways to design a cell therapy treatment targeting tumors.

Tranbarger graduated from Amherst College and holds two graduate degrees from Harvard, including an MBA. Atlas Venture brought him in as an “entrepreneur-in-residence” in 2024, and he began developing Mithril later that year. He said Mithril’s drug programs will continue inside Anthropic, where he will lead the company’s broader internal drug development effort. In an IPO filing, Anthropic said AI could accelerate progress in biology and medicine and argued that its teams need firsthand research and discovery experience to build tools for science.
