The U.S. Commerce Department has removed export restrictions on Anthropic's Fable and Mythos AI models, less than three weeks after initially limiting their use due to national security concerns. This decision permits Mythos 5 models to have limited access for select U.S. organizations. Anthropic had previously disabled its advanced AI models following a June 12 order, but the company is now permitted to resume access under specific conditions.
The agency’s move follows heightened scrutiny by Washington over the potential misuse of advanced AI technologies by military intelligence in nations such as China and Russia. In response to these concerns, Anthropic agreed to collaborate with the U.S. government to identify security risks and ensure that its AI models are deployed responsibly.
U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed the agreement, emphasizing Anthropic's commitment to compliance with government protocols. While access is currently restored for select domestic entities, questions persist regarding the United States' long-term capacity to mitigate similar national security threats posed by international actors as the AI industry faces continued regulatory oversight.
