Anthropic Reaffirms Ad-Free Claude Policy in IPO Letter
  • •Anthropic’s seven founders reaffirmed in an IPO letter that Claude will not carry ads.
  • •The policy contrasts with OpenAI’s plan to make advertising a major revenue source.
  • •Anthropic’s marketing and advertising costs rose $170 million in 2025 and $273 million in the first half of 2026.

Anthropic’s seven founders reaffirmed on the 26th, local time, in a letter included in the company’s IPO prospectus that Claude would not carry advertising. They said including ads in revenue targets could pressure a platform to push users to engage more, and that they would not build that incentive into Claude. The company said Claude is meant to provide genuinely helpful answers, not capture users’ attention.

The policy contrasts with OpenAI, which has expanded ChatGPT use through a free service and plans to make advertising one of its major revenue sources. Anthropic has used the difference to distinguish itself from competitors. In a Super Bowl ad in the United States last February, it promoted the message: “Ads are coming to AI. But not to Claude.”

The promise not to place ads in Claude does not mean Anthropic is cutting its own advertising spending. According to the IPO filing, the company’s marketing and advertising costs rose by $170 million year over year in 2025 and by $273 million in the first half of 2026. The filing cited increased media spending to support product launches as a main reason. Anthropic is investing in external advertising to promote Claude while keeping ads out of the product.

Anthropic released ads about Claude last February. The letter, included in the IPO prospectus, restated the founders’ position that the company would focus on giving users helpful answers rather than earning advertising revenue.
