Anthropic Faces Cloud Capacity Challenges
- •Leaked filing says Anthropic faces difficulty securing cloud capacity from AWS, Google and Microsoft
- •Anthropic estimates cloud contracts could exceed $750 billion, including deals still under negotiation
- •First-half loss was $80.7 billion; third-quarter revenue reached $16.8 billion, up 45% quarter over quarter
Anthropic is struggling to secure enough cloud computing capacity from AWS, Google and Microsoft, according to a leaked S-1 filing cited by The Wall Street Journal. The companies increasingly see the Claude maker as a competitor rather than a customer. The filing says Anthropic believes it could spend more than $750 billion on cloud contracts, including agreements still under negotiation.
The company is also leasing its own data centers and working with third-party operators. It worries those operators have a “limited operating history,” which could make them less reliable than the large cloud providers. Anthropic reported an $80.7 billion net loss and $16.3 billion in revenue in the first half of the year; two customers accounted for about a fifth of sales, according to the WSJ report.
The filing warns Anthropic could be liable for damages caused by harmful AI behavior that exceed its available insurance coverage, building on risk disclosures reported earlier. Last week, the company told prospective investors that third-quarter revenue had reached $16.8 billion, up 45% from the previous quarter. Anthropic is reportedly targeting a November IPO. It did not immediately respond to TechCrunch’s request for comment.
