Anthropic IPO Filing Lifts Neocloud Shares
  • •Anthropic filed for an IPO, lifting CoreWeave and Nebius during morning trading before mixed closes.
  • •Anthropic disclosed up to $120.5 billion in compute spending agreements with SpaceX’s AI subsidiary through 2029.
  • •Nebius announced a $3.5 billion Citi facility, while Musk predicted neocloud failures and denied plans to acquire them.

Anthropic filed for an initial public offering on October 26, giving investors another reason to bet on the buildout of AI computing capacity. After the filing, neocloud companies CoreWeave and Nebius reversed early losses and rose during morning trading. CoreWeave ended the session up nearly 2%, while Nebius closed down about 3.5%. Investors were weighing which companies that rent AI computing capacity can fund expansion over time. Anthropic’s prospectus says it plans to use some offering proceeds for compute and infrastructure investments.

On October 25, Elon Musk predicted widespread failures and consolidation among neoclouds, arguing that debt markets had nearly shut off funding for companies without substantial revenue beyond AI data centers. He said SpaceX had raised $40 billion in debt for GPUs, processors used to train and run AI models, supported by Starlink and launch revenue. The article says Musk’s warning could favor SpaceX in the competition for capital, while noting that the company has a commercial interest in how investors view the financing squeeze.

Anthropic’s filing disclosed agreements to spend up to $120.5 billion on compute from SpaceX’s AI subsidiary, with terms extending into 2029 and cancellation rights after initial non-cancelable periods. Musk separately denied that SpaceX planned to buy neocloud companies. The article argues that the financing picture should be assessed company by company: on October 22, Nebius announced a $3.5 billion Citi facility for data-center development, GPU purchases and general corporate purposes. The senior secured loan matures in 364 days, starts at Term SOFR plus 2.75 percentage points, and can rise to a spread of 3.50 points, subject to adjustments.

The publication says it expects the AI buildout to continue and says financing pressure will shape which projects proceed, which operators expand and how much revenue reaches shareholders. It says supplier prospects depend on funded spending turning into orders and cash receipts, and that customer commitments, shipments and cash generation can help distinguish durable demand from canceled projects. The publication also disclosed entering an earnings-focused trade on an unnamed supplier; its stock ended the session up over 8%. It said two previous trades in the company had closed for gains of 55% and 347%, while a longer-dated trade opened in July remained open. The new trade centers on upcoming earnings, with an outcome expected within two weeks.
