Anthropic Calls for Stronger AI Oversight

- •California lawmakers may pursue AI regulations when the Legislature returns in about a month
Anthropic said in a letter to California Gov. Gavin Newsom that courts should be able to block AI programs posing serious risks. The Claude chatbot maker also supports AI companies developing kill switches and allowing outside safety auditors to work alongside company employees.
Anthropic sent the letter earlier this month, and POLITICO shared it exclusively. The company called for laws that create “real, empowered oversight,” saying California’s approach could become a model for other states and a starting point for future policy debates.
California officials, including Newsom, are considering stronger AI regulation amid fears about the technology and reports of autonomous AI agents trying to hack government and other websites. The state Legislature is expected to pursue multiple regulations when it returns in about a month. An earlier version of the report misstated when Anthropic sent the letter.
