Apple Reclaims the Top Market Cap Spot
  • •Apple returned to No. 1 with a $5.03 trillion market cap as concerns grew over excessive AI infrastructure spending.
  • •Nvidia fell 4.2% to a $4.93 trillion valuation, dropping to No. 2 for the first time in three months.
  • •Apple shares rose 26.8% this year, compared with Nvidia’s 9.7% gain over the same period.

Apple returned to the world’s top market capitalization on the New York Stock Exchange close on the 30th, with a valuation of $5.03 trillion, as concerns mounted over major technology companies’ excessive investment in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. Apple shares fell 1.2% from the previous day, but Nvidia dropped 4.2%, reducing its market value to $4.93 trillion and leaving it in second place. Apple last surpassed Nvidia at the close three months ago, after briefly taking the lead in late July.

A broad selloff in technology stocks was attributed to Amazon, Intel and Google parent Alphabet reporting results and outlooks below market expectations. Investors see major technology companies pouring substantial capital expenditure (CapEx) into AI infrastructure while generating less cash revenue than expected. Intel plunged 28.58% that day; Bloomberg reported that its shares fell more than 45% during October, the steepest monthly decline in 40 years.

Apple has held back from the race to make large-scale AI investments and kept spending to a minimum. While the midrange and budget smartphone and PC markets have contracted amid shortages of memory and other semiconductors, Apple has increased its market share. Investors regard it as a relatively safe investment among technology companies. Since the start of the year, Apple shares have risen 26.8%, nearly three times Nvidia’s 9.7% gain over the same period.

This was the first time Apple ranked first by market capitalization since hardware specialist John Ternus took office as CEO in September. From the 26th through the 28th, Apple unveiled several products, including a new MacBook Pro with a touchscreen and a new iPad. The report linked the ranking change with the technology stock selloff, Apple’s comparatively low AI spending and its growing market share. At the close, Apple’s market value was $40 billion higher than Nvidia’s: $5.03 trillion versus $4.93 trillion. Both companies’ shares fell that day, with Nvidia’s decline steeper. The report also said Apple’s share gain since the start of the year was nearly three times Nvidia’s, amid rising concerns about investment in AI infrastructure.
