Many commercial vessels already utilize AI-powered optimization for route planning, fuel management, and weather avoidance. Industry definitions distinguish between "smart ships," which incorporate automated systems to support human decision-making, and "autonomous ships," designed for operation with little to no intervention. Practical trials have demonstrated limited success, such as the 2022 voyage of the Suzaku, which navigated 490 miles of congested waters off Japan, and the Yara Birkeland, which has completed over 175 fertilizer-transporting voyages since 2023 along the Norwegian coast, although the latter operates with three human crew members.
In May 2026, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted the Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) Code, the first global safety framework for these vessels. The code mandates rigorous standards for navigation, cybersecurity, and remote operations while emphasizing the necessity of human oversight. Organizations like DNV are actively shaping these safety protocols; notably, DNV launched the four-year SAFEMATE project in 2025 to certify technologies like collision avoidance systems.
