AWS Reports Prime Day Metrics and AI Launches
- •AWS reported Prime Day 2026 traffic metrics, including 59 trillion DynamoDB requests over four days and 44,000 fault-injection experiments.
- •Claude Haiku 5.5 launched on AWS at around 75% less than Haiku 4.5 for most tasks, with effort controls.
- •Nova 2.5 Sonic supports real-time voice agents, while Strands Box adds policy-controlled sandboxing for AI agents.
AWS’s October 13, 2026, weekly roundup reported Prime Day 2026 infrastructure metrics and highlighted launches and updates from the past week, including Claude Haiku 5.5, Amazon Nova 2.5 Sonic, and Strands Box. Prime Day ran in June; AWS said the event’s systems handled record traffic without service disruption.
Over the four days, Amazon DynamoDB processed more than 59 trillion requests and peaked at 192 million requests per second, while maintaining single-digit millisecond responses. AWS Lambda handled more than 2.3 trillion invocations per day. Amazon EBS exceeded 24.8 trillion I/O operations at peak and moved more than an exabyte of data daily. Amazon ECS launched an average of 158.3 million tasks per day on AWS Fargate, up 47.7% from last year, and AWS Graviton powered up to 49% of the compute Amazon.com used on Amazon EC2. Before Prime Day, teams ran more than 44,000 AWS Fault Injection Service experiments, over six times the number in 2025, by deliberately injecting failures months ahead of the event.
Claude Haiku 5.5 became available on Amazon Bedrock and Claude Platform on AWS. AWS described it as the fastest model in the Claude 5.5 family and said it costs around 75% less than Claude Haiku 4.5 for most tasks. It is the first Haiku model with effort controls, which let users adjust cost and intelligence for each task. AWS said Claude Opus 5.5 can handle planning and judgment while multiple Haiku subagents run in parallel on routing, classification, and small code changes. Amazon Nova 2.5 Sonic, a speech-to-speech model for real-time voice agents, offers improved reasoning, instruction following, and tool-calling accuracy, along with lower latency. It supports expressive voices in seven languages, controllable turn-taking, and a 256K context window, and can be paired with generally available Strands Bidi Agents.
Amazon GuardDuty RDS Protection added detection of data exfiltration and destruction in Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL and Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL. It builds behavioral baselines and uses machine-learning anomaly detection and threat intelligence to flag unusual data access, without requiring agents, extra infrastructure, or database configuration changes. AWS Lambda added OAuth authentication for self-managed Apache Kafka event sources through identity providers such as Amazon Cognito and Okta; supported Kafka offerings include self-hosted clusters, Confluent Cloud, Aiven, and Redpanda. Amazon Redshift added Apache Iceberg materialized views, which store precomputed joins and aggregations as Iceberg tables in Amazon S3, registered in the AWS Glue Data Catalog. SQL-created results can be queried by Iceberg-compatible engines including Amazon Athena, Apache Spark, Trino, and Snowflake; Redshift updates them by recomputing changed data.
AWS also introduced Strands Box, an open-source sandbox in developer preview under the Apache 2.0 license. Powered by Dogwood, it combines operating-system containment with policies that can limit agent actions based on prior activity; credentials are attached at an egress gateway rather than kept in the agent’s environment. AWS Continuum for Penetration Testing entered public preview with CI/CD pipeline integration, providing findings and remediation guidance during deployment and retesting to verify fixes. The roundup also linked to a post on Postman’s Agent Mode for 40 million developers on Amazon Bedrock and a September 2026 AI-builder recap. AWS re:Invent is scheduled for November 30 to December 4 in Las Vegas, with reserved seating open. Listed AWS Community Days are in San Francisco on October 13, Miami on October 14, Brisbane, Cape Town, and Malta on October 16, and Mumbai on October 17.
