CHAI Launches Governance Playbooks for Health AI Adoption
- •CHAI released eight governance playbooks to guide health systems in responsible AI adoption.
- •The frameworks were developed through collaboration among more than 100 healthcare organizations.
- •These playbooks provide the foundational structure for the Joint Commission's upcoming AI certification program.
The Coalition for Health AI (CHAI) released a series of eight governance playbooks on May 28, 2026, to assist health systems in the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence. These resources provide practical guidance and baseline controls to ensure AI is implemented safely, transparently, and consistently. The frameworks cover organizational AI policy, structure, and resources, as well as lifecycle management, risk and impact assessments, responsible data management, third-party oversight, and education, training, and feedback mechanisms. Developed through a collaboration of more than 100 healthcare organizations, the playbooks are designed to be adaptable to the specific mission, workflows, and risk tolerance of individual health systems.
CHAI CEO Brian Anderson, M.D., stated that the initiative aims to make responsible AI usable for delivery organizations across the country regardless of their existing resources. The new playbooks build upon a September 2025 guidance document published in partnership with the Joint Commission on the Responsible Use of AI in Healthcare. As the Joint Commission plans to launch a voluntary AI certification program this year, these playbooks provide the necessary framework for health systems to pursue such certification. Taylor Rhodes, the Responsible AI Program Director at Mercy Health, noted that the resources help translate intentions into governed, measurable, and sustained clinical practices.
