ChatGPT-4 Speeds Nursing Curriculum Redesign
- •Customized ChatGPT-4 workflow cut nursing curriculum redesign from 41.6 hours to 2.9 hours
- •Twenty-five faculty estimated manual redesign time and described workload, barriers and AI interest
- •ChatGPT-4 was tailored to American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s 2021 Essentials
Taylor Long, Nadine Wodwaski and Phillip Olla reported in the 2026 International Journal of Nursing Education that a customized ChatGPT-4 workflow helped faculty complete nursing curriculum redesign tasks faster than manual methods. The study examined curriculum updates tied to accreditation standards and the changing healthcare environment, where time-intensive redesign work can add workload for nursing faculty.
The researchers used a sequential explanatory mixed-methods approach (combining survey data and qualitative responses in order). Twenty-five faculty completed a retrospective survey estimating manual redesign time and describing the redesign process. ChatGPT-4 was tailored to align with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s 2021 Essentials, a framework used for accreditation compliance.
Manual redesign took approximately 41.6 hours, while the AI-supported workflow took 2.9 hours. The difference saved nearly 39 hours and showed 93% time-savings. Faculty responses named cognitive workload, structural barriers and interest in AI support, though the authors said the findings may be affected by self-report and recall bias.
