ChatGPT Adds iCloud Mail and Calendar Integration
  • •OpenAI announced on the 27th that ChatGPT supports iCloud Mail and Calendar plugins.
  • •Free and paid users can manage email and view or edit schedules on web, desktop, and iOS.
  • •Integration is limited to iCloud accounts, while company accounts may face administrator-set restrictions.

OpenAI announced on the 27th, local time, that ChatGPT supports plugins connecting Apple’s iCloud Mail and Calendar. Following integrations with Gmail and Google Calendar, the service now lets users manage email and view or edit calendar events by making requests in natural language. Both free users and paid subscribers can use the plugins on web, desktop, and iOS.

To connect, users must sign in with an Apple account and create a separate app-specific password for iCloud Mail and Calendar. Features on company-managed accounts may be restricted by administrator policies. The Mail plugin supports searching and reading email, managing messages and drafts, sending email, and searching contacts. The Calendar plugin can view, create, and edit events.

The integration is limited to iCloud services. Even if a user also accesses Gmail or Outlook through the iPhone’s built-in Mail app, ChatGPT cannot access email in those accounts. Supported addresses end in @icloud.com, @me.com, or @mac.com. OpenAI said on the 27th through ChatGPT’s official account that users on all plans can use the iCloud plugins on web, desktop, and iOS.

ChatGPT Pro subscribers can also ask OpenAI’s AI agent, Dots, directly to configure the iCloud Mail and Calendar plugins. Dots can access information from connected email and calendar accounts. OpenAI confirmed support on web, desktop, and iOS, but the extent of integration with other features, including Work and Codex, has not been confirmed.

The integration announcement came as cooperation and tensions between Apple and OpenAI continued. ChatGPT had earlier become the first AI assistant integrated directly into Apple’s Siri. Their relationship was seen as changing after Apple agreed to work with Google to improve its AI models. In July, Apple filed a lawsuit alleging that OpenAI employees had misappropriated trade secrets.

The companies have continued to collaborate as well. On the same day, Apple unveiled the M6 iMac and MacBook Pro and introduced a new chatbot experience that uses OpenAI models in part across productivity apps including Pages, Numbers, and Keynote. With the iCloud Mail and Calendar integration, OpenAI expanded the ways ChatGPT can be used within Apple’s ecosystem.
