Promptwatch reported on August 18, 2026, that ChatGPT Search cited Reddit far less after August 14, based on citation data from July 7 to August 17, 2026. Reddit held a steady 3.8% share of ChatGPT Search citations from July 18 through August 7, then fell below 1% on August 14; the August 14-17 average was 0.5%, an 86% drop. The report counted only responses with at least one citation.

Promptwatch said Reddit averaged 3.83% of ChatGPT citations from July 18 through August 7, one of the largest domain shares in its data. The slide began on August 8, the same day ChatGPT changed its query fanout behavior (sending related searches in parallel), when Reddit’s share moved from the high 3s to the mid 2s. Promptwatch said the chart shows timing, not cause, and said a shift in ChatGPT source selection is an obvious candidate while a data-collection issue cannot be ruled out.

Google AI Overviews showed a slower change over the same July 7 to August 17, 2026 period. Reddit averaged 2.37% of AI Overview citations during the first seven days and 2.10% during the final seven, an 11.3% relative decline. The report said AI Overviews did not show a single sharp break, with Reddit’s citation share moving gradually from about 2.5% in early July to about 2.1% in August.

Google AI Mode also showed a gradual decline rather than ChatGPT’s one-day cliff. Reddit averaged 2.22% of AI Mode citations during the first seven days and 1.54% during the final seven, a 30.5% relative decline. Promptwatch said the clearest step came at the end of July, when average share moved from 2.06% between July 22 and July 28 to 1.78% over the following seven days, then continued edging lower.

Promptwatch said readers should check response and citation collection volume around August 14 before treating the ChatGPT drop as a source-selection change. The company said it collects millions of prompt responses, citations, and click data from real interfaces including ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, AI Overviews, and more, totaling over 26 billion data points.
