Claude Arrives on Apple CarPlay
- •Anthropic integrates Claude chatbot with Apple CarPlay after iOS 26.4 third-party chatbot support
- •Claude on CarPlay supports hands-free voice questions, recent chats, mute controls, and conversation indicators
- •Claude cannot control vehicle or iPhone functions, and third-party wake words remain unsupported
Anthropic made its Claude AI chatbot available on Apple's CarPlay platform on September 6, 2026, letting drivers use the Claude app through a car's infotainment system. The integration follows Apple's addition of support for third-party chatbots in CarPlay in iOS 26.4. Chatbot apps on CarPlay must support a voice control screen, use Apple's designated CarPlay template, and receive the required entitlement from Apple.
Claude on CarPlay opens with a “Start a hands-free conversation” screen, where users can begin a new chat or access recent chats. The app includes controls to mute or unmute a conversation and to end or resume it. The interface also shows visual cues that indicate when Claude is listening or speaking, so users can follow the conversation without relying only on audio.
The CarPlay version of Claude supports hands-free, voice-based questions, but it does not let Claude control vehicle functions or iPhone functions. Users also have to launch Claude from the CarPlay interface because third-party wake words are not supported yet. The article says CarPlay has long supported third-party apps with restrictions intended to avoid distracting drivers, and Apple has been selective about which app types can be integrated into the platform.
OpenAI added CarPlay support for ChatGPT earlier this year, according to the article. Claude's arrival adds another AI chatbot option to CarPlay after Apple opened the platform to third-party chatbot apps under its template, entitlement, and voice-control requirements.
