Engineer Says Claude Code Makes Work Soul-Sucking
- •Anonymous engineer says Claude Code generates specifications, tests, tickets and reports at his company
- •Voxium says employees work 12 to 13 hours daily with little time to review generated code
- •Other coders cite lost purpose and fear job cuts as Claude takes on more coding tasks
An anonymous software engineer at an undisclosed company says Claude Code now generates product specifications, tests, tickets and reports, while employees work 12 to 13 hours a day largely to submit prompts. Posting on X under the username voxium, the engineer said he feared employer retaliation and described the role as “soul-sucking.”
Voxium said workers face pressure to ship products quickly and have little time to review Claude’s output or understand the code. He said engineers from L1 to L7 are all doing the same thing: talking to Claude, while bugs go unresolved and employees no longer feel they are thinking or achieving anything. He said he would accept the workflow if workers had more time to check the code.
In comments to Business Insider, voxium said that losing the chance to understand code and solve difficult problems left work without purpose. He blamed management’s focus on sprint cycles, pull requests and feature counts, even when features do little for users. Other coders replying to the post said they recognized the same loss of purpose at their companies, and some feared job cuts as Claude took on more coding tasks. The post drew comments from Elon Musk, who replied “Yikes,” and All-In Podcast co-host Chamath Palihapitiya, who compared AI-assisted work to pressing a button at a casino slot machine.
The report also cites a 2025 study that found AI coding assistants slowed experienced developers, and describes “loop engineering” as a system that prompts itself. It recalls an incident in April when an AI agent wiped a startup’s production database and its backups in nine seconds through a single API call to its cloud provider.
