Claude Models Coming to Copilot EU Data Boundary
- •Microsoft says Claude models in Copilot will enter the EU Data Boundary by the end of 2026.
- •EU and EFTA organizations will get in-boundary processing across Copilot, including Copilot Cowork.
- •Processing will shift automatically for current users; administrators control enablement for others, disabled by default.
Microsoft announced on November 5 that Anthropic’s Claude models in Microsoft Copilot will be processed within the EU Data Boundary by the end of 2026. Organizations in the European Union (EU) and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) will be able to use Claude across Copilot experiences, including Copilot Cowork, with processing inside the boundary where their data is already stored. Microsoft says customers will not have to choose between access to Claude and its regional data-processing commitments.
Microsoft describes the EU Data Boundary as a commitment to store and process Microsoft 365 and other online-services data within the EU and EFTA, beyond current regulatory requirements. Eligible Microsoft 365 customers receive it under their contracts without opting in or paying extra. Those seeking country-level control can use in-country data residency, available in 10 EU and EFTA countries. Claude will join Microsoft-operated and other models already processing data within the boundary, supporting organizations with compliance needs, including regulated industries and the public sector.
Claude models already power Copilot Chat, Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps, Copilot Cowork and Copilot Code. Microsoft says they are covered by its enterprise data protection, customer data is not used to train generative AI foundation models, and administrators control who can use them. Existing Claude users will not need to act; processing will move into the boundary automatically when available. For organizations that have not enabled Claude, the setting is disabled by default in the EU and EFTA; administrators can enable it for everyone or selected users and groups in the Microsoft 365 admin center. Microsoft says it will provide more details closer to availability.
