  • •Digital Hollywood University will make Claude available across campus starting in November.
  • •All students and staff can use university-issued accounts; the university says it is the first in Japan to adopt Claude campuswide.
  • •The rollout supports creative work and academic writing, alongside revised assignments and rules for AI use.

Digital Hollywood University (DHU) in Chiyoda, Tokyo, announced on October 14 that it will adopt Anthropic’s generative AI, Claude, across the university. Starting in November, all students and staff will be able to use Claude through university-issued accounts without worrying about usage limits or costs. DHU says it is the first university in Japan to adopt Claude campuswide.

Since September, DHU has operated a campuswide AI platform that provides access to multiple generative AI tools, as well as Campus Portal, an education platform with an AI teaching assistant for each course. Claude will join the campuswide platform. The university says it aims to connect AI use with classes and learning records, helping students develop the ability to think and create with AI, rather than simply distributing accounts.

DHU lists possible uses including video and game production and brainstorming in undergraduate programs, research, analysis and thesis writing in graduate programs, and more efficient administrative work. The university also plans to redesign assignments and assessment around AI use, introduce a process for students to disclose AI use in their work, and establish internal rules for handling copyrighted works and personal information.

Campuswide adoption of generative AI at Japanese universities has followed the introduction of ChatGPT and Gemini. Tohoku University introduced ChatGPT in May 2023, ahead of other universities in Japan. In April 2025, Shiga University became the first in Japan to introduce ChatGPT Edu, a plan for educational institutions, across all its faculties. In April 2026, Otemon Gakuin University made Gemini available to all students; DHU’s rollout will add Claude to the mix.

Anthropic launched Claude for Education, a plan for educational institutions, in April 2025. In DHU’s press release, Hidetoshi Tojo, president and representative executive officer of Anthropic Japan, said that regularly using advanced AI from student days and learning its potential and limits while applying it responsibly would be a major asset in society. DHU’s announcement did not state usage figures or the cost of the campuswide rollout. It says the service will begin in November but does not give a specific start date.
