GitHub Reports 2026 Octoverse Growth
- •GitHub’s 2026 Octoverse report records sharp growth in activity associated with agentic engineering.
- •Merged pull requests tripled to 220 million monthly, while commits more than tripled to 7.38 billion.
- •New repositories doubled to 30.3 million monthly; report also breaks figures down by industry and repository topic.
At GitHub Universe on October 28, executive vice president Jay Parikh announced GitHub’s 2026 Octoverse report, which records a sharp rise in activity associated with agentic engineering. Merged pull requests reached 220 million per month after tripling in less than a year. Monthly commits more than tripled to 7.38 billion, with most of that increase occurring in the second half of 2026. The monthly rate of new repositories doubled during the year to 30.3 million.
The report adds figures by industry and counts repositories involving interoperability or reverse engineering. For the country rankings, GitHub summed pushes to public repositories over the Octoverse year and used an LLM to extract ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes from contributors’ profile locations to adjust for possible VPN-related bias. For industry categories, public repositories created from 2022 to 2026 were sorted into NAICS sectors using a fine-tuned multilingual embedding model. The model used repository names, descriptions, topics and README files, drawing random samples from each year.
The interoperability count covers public repositories created in each year whose name, description, topics or README mention interoperability, reverse engineering or related terms, including clean-room implementations, drop-in replacements and protocol re-implementations.
