Goa’s Department of Information Technology, Electronics and Communications aims to train and certify 50,000 people in artificial intelligence by 2030, IT minister Rohan Khaunte said on Saturday. He said the effort would build AI skills among students and young professionals as the technology becomes more important to the economy. Khaunte said the state government wants AI to make public services more responsive and efficient.
Khaunte announced that the Goa AI Policy would be launched at the AI Tech Conclave, scheduled for October 22 and 23 and organised by the Startup and IT Promotion Cell. He said the policy takes a structured approach to AI development, with skills training as a priority. He added that practical value for residents requires people to understand, develop and apply AI to local needs, alongside access to technology.
Khaunte said Goa has skilled workers, but many IT professionals rely on technologies developed elsewhere. He said Goan professionals should also design, develop and promote solutions that can compete globally. The government wants Goa to be a place to work, innovate, collaborate and build businesses as AI reshapes governance, industry and technology, he said.
The minister highlighted the potential for a sovereign AI platform to benefit the tourism department and stressed responsible data use and governance. He said a Konkani large language model is being developed and will launch soon. The proposed model is expected to support AI applications in the local language, while platforms such as Bhashini could help address language barriers and improve access to digital services. The conclave is expected to bring stakeholders together to discuss AI adoption, skills development and opportunities to strengthen Goa’s technology ecosystem.
