Google Brings Personalization to Gemini in Cars
- •Google says Personal Intelligence is rolling out to Android Auto, using information from apps drivers approve.
- •Gemini can check Gmail, Calendar, and Photos for destination details, including flight information and places mentioned in schedules or images.
- •Google built-in cars are expected to get the feature over the coming months; personalized answers require a connected phone.
Google said on the 20th, in a post on its official blog, that it is bringing Personal Intelligence to Gemini in cars. The feature uses emails, calendar entries, photos, and other information that drivers have allowed it to access. It is rolling out to Android Auto, while vehicles with Google software built in are expected to receive it over the coming months.
Drivers can use Gemini in cars in two ways. Android Auto connects a smartphone to the car’s display so drivers can use the phone’s navigation, music, and messaging features on screen or by voice. Google built-in means Google software, including Maps and a voice assistant, is installed directly in the car’s infotainment system.
Personal Intelligence can connect information from Gmail, Google Calendar, Photos, Maps, YouTube, and Search, if the user allows access. It looks across those sources to answer questions. For example, when asked about a boarding gate and whether a flight is on time, Gemini can check a booking confirmation email and flight information. It can also find a destination in a calendar entry or a photo, such as a hospital or a car wash seen in a photo from last week. For restaurant searches, it can take usual eating habits and preferences into account, or give directions to a coffee shop mentioned in a conversation the previous day. Drivers do not need to say an address or place name if the connected apps contain the relevant information.
Users must turn on the feature themselves. If they have already enabled it in the Gemini app on their phone, that setting carries over to Android Auto. They can choose which apps to connect and turn the feature off at any time in Gemini settings. In Google built-in cars, personalized answers are available only when the driver gets in with a phone connected. Navigation, music playback, calls, and general questions remain available even when Personal Intelligence is off.
