Google has officially renamed its research and learning tool, NotebookLM, to Gemini Notebook. The product remains a standalone platform while receiving deeper integration across the broader Google ecosystem. Josh Woodward, VP of Google Labs, announced that the tool, which originated as Project Tailwind at Google I/O 2023, is now utilized by over 30 million people and more than 600,000 organizations. These users leverage the platform for tasks such as creating interactive onboarding materials and generating audio or video summaries from notes.

A primary upgrade accompanying this transition is the rollout of a secure cloud computer for every notebook. This feature enables Gemini Notebook to write and execute code natively, facilitating complex data analysis directly grounded in user-provided source documents. Access to this capability is available today for Google AI Ultra users and specific Workspace business customers with AI Ultra Access and AI Expanded Access. A broader rollout to all web-based Pro users is scheduled for the coming weeks.

Google is also expanding cross-platform accessibility. Users can currently access and create notebooks within the Gemini app with full synchronization between the app and the standalone Gemini Notebook interface. The company plans to incorporate these notebooks into AI Mode within Google Search in the near future. This update marks a continuation of the platform's development since its initial launch as Project Tailwind in 2023.
