Korea Overseas Infrastructure & Urban Development Corporation (KIND) said on the 23rd that it invested in an AI data center development project in Jakarta, Indonesia, supporting Korean companies’ first entry into the overseas commercial data center market. Korean firms secured about $107 million in overseas orders through construction, equipment supply and operations.

The project involves building and operating an AI data center in Jakarta with one underground floor, 11 above-ground floors and about 49,000 square meters of total floor area. Its total cost is about $320 million. It is the first case of Korean companies directly building and operating an AI-ready data center overseas.

Korean investors, including the Plus INNI IDC Fund, S Fund and KIND, joined Indonesian Sinar Mas affiliate SM+ as co-sponsors. KIND invested $14 million in equity to support Korean companies’ participation.

LG CNS will install mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) systems and handle facility operations and maintenance. It signed contracts worth $64 million for construction and $6 million for operations and maintenance, and says its contracts across both areas total at least $70 million. LG Electronics will supply cooling and air-conditioning systems, while LG Energy Solution will provide batteries for uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems.

Investment orders secured through KIND’s participation totaled $37 million. Combined with LG CNS’s construction and operations orders, Korean companies’ total overseas orders came to about $107 million. The article’s question-and-answer section also describes the total as the sum of LG CNS’s contracts worth at least $70 million and the $37 million in investment orders.

The project is proceeding through a “Team Korea” approach, with government bodies, public institutions and private companies participating in investment, construction, equipment supply and operations. The article says Korean companies’ overseas work, previously focused on individual construction projects or equipment supply, has expanded to data center operations.

Earlier, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport launched the AIDC Construction Industry Promotion Forum, with more than 80 participating organizations from industry, academia, research and government, to develop AI data centers as a growth area for the construction industry. The forum has discussed policy issues involving data center manufacturing, construction and operations, regulatory improvements, and financing for overseas expansion.

KIND plans to expand digital infrastructure investment and identify overseas projects connected to AI and big data. The ministry also plans to continue regulatory improvements and financial support to help Korean companies expand overseas in the AI data center sector.
