South Korea and AMD Review AI Chip Partnership
  • •South Korea’s science ministry and AMD reviewed AI chip cooperation at a committee meeting on the 4th.
  • •Plans include linking Korean NPUs with AMD CPUs and GPUs, an AI research center, and university support.
  • •AMD held its Advancing AI event in South Korea for the first time; registration closed early after about 1,300 sign-ups.

South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT and AMD met on the 4th at the Westin Seoul Parnas Hotel to review progress, implementation plans, and next steps for AI semiconductor cooperation under their memorandum of understanding (MOU). The meeting coincided with AMD’s Advancing AI World Tour Seoul 2026 and followed the MOU signed in July this year. The two sides agreed to continue discussing cooperation at regular committee meetings.

The meeting was attended by Lee Do-gyu, director general of the ministry’s ICT policy office, and Keith Strier, AMD senior vice president of global AI markets. Key projects include building domestic heterogeneous AI computing infrastructure that connects AMD central processing units (CPUs) and graphics processing units (GPUs) with Korean neural processing units (NPUs), establishing an AMD AI research center, supporting universities, and training AI talent. During AMD Chair and CEO Lisa Su’s visit to South Korea last month, she and Vice Minister Ryu Je-myeong reaffirmed their commitment to AI semiconductor cooperation and held an industry meeting on developing the domestic AI ecosystem.

Advancing AI, the event that prompted the committee meeting, is AMD’s flagship AI technology event and was held in South Korea for the first time. Registration closed early after about 1,300 people signed up in advance. South Korean companies working with AMD on AI computing infrastructure, including LG Electronics, Nota, Moreh, and MangoBoost, attended to share views on AI technology and ecosystem development. A panel titled “Building Korea’s AI Nation” discussed how South Korea’s AI ecosystem could develop and cooperate in response to changes in global AI technology.

Vice Minister Ryu attended the event, congratulated AMD on bringing it to South Korea, and said the two sides would continue expanding their cooperation. He said the event reflected AMD’s view of South Korea as an important AI cooperation partner. Ryu also said the ministry would work to carry out the MOU projects as planned and support the growth of domestic AI semiconductor companies and the competitiveness of the AI ecosystem.
