South Korea Opens Five ICT Training Centers
- •The science ministry launched five advanced ICT talent centers at Pusan National University.
- •Three ITRC centers cover AI semiconductors, system software and quantum-AI convergence; two regional centers focus on local industries.
- •Each center will receive 500 million to 2 billion won annually for up to eight years and train graduate-level talent.
South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT held a joint signboard ceremony at Pusan National University on the 5th, launching five research centers selected this year to train advanced information and communications technology (ICT) talent. The group comprises three University ICT Research Centers (ITRCs) and two Regional Intelligent Innovation Talent Development Centers.
The three ITRCs were selected for AI semiconductors at Korea University Sejong, systems software at Pohang University of Science and Technology, and quantum-AI convergence at Hanyang University. The two general projects will each receive 1 billion won annually, while one regional small-scale project will receive 500 million won annually, for up to eight years. They plan to train 40 master’s and doctoral students each year through the general projects and 20 through the small-scale project.
The regional talent development program began in 2015 and has trained about 1,400 local ICT professionals. This year, Pusan National University was selected for smart manufacturing and ports, and Korea Energy University for energy, smart farms and mobility. Each project will receive 2 billion won annually for up to eight years, run degree programs for working professionals serving at least 20 people annually, and involve at least 20 graduate student researchers in industry-academic joint research.
The ministry said the ceremony marked the start of all five centers’ projects. The selected centers include work on AI semiconductors and quantum-AI convergence, while the regional program will train talent in smart manufacturing, ports, energy, smart farms and mobility. Funding lasts up to eight years for both program types: ITRC general projects receive 1 billion won annually, the small-scale project receives 500 million won, and regional talent projects receive 2 billion won.
