MediaTek’s Google TPU v9 Schedule May Slip
- •MediaTek’s Google TPU v9 initial tape-out could slip to January 2027, with shipments potentially delayed to the first quarter of 2028
- •ByteDance is nearing a deal to buy MediaTek data center chips, Bloomberg reports, citing sources
- •Taiwanese ASIC firms report revenue growth as 2027 global AI ASIC accelerator shipments are projected at 14.1 million units
Taiwan’s ASIC design industry is gaining opportunities as MediaTek’s Google TPU v9 project faces a possible schedule delay, according to Commercial Times, citing institutional investors. Design revisions could push the initial tape-out to January 2027 and shipments to the first quarter of 2028. The November 2026 sampling target remains unchanged.
Revisions to Google’s TPU v9 Core A design, codenamed Humufish, delayed development by approximately three weeks and affected MediaTek’s work on the Core B and I/O designs. The production-version tape-out is expected in the second quarter. TrendForce says the chip is expected to use Intel’s EMIB-T advanced packaging, while substrate yields remain a challenge to scaling production and controlling costs.
Bloomberg, citing sources, reports ByteDance is nearing an agreement to buy MediaTek data center chips. The deal could make the TikTok parent MediaTek’s second major ASIC customer after Google, supporting the company’s efforts to diversify beyond smartphones and compete with Qualcomm and Broadcom in data centers.
Taiwan’s other ASIC designers also reported growth: GUC posted record September revenue of NT$7.145 billion, up 97.8% year over year, while Alchip reported NT$9.979 billion, up 496%, as shipments of 3nm AI accelerators increased. Faraday obtained Samsung’s 2nm process design kit after Samsung’s 4nm capacity was reportedly fully utilized. It completed setup for Intel’s 18A-P design environment, began offering services, and plans to pursue more projects in 2027.
Institutional investors cited by Commercial Times project global AI ASIC accelerator shipments at 14.1 million units in 2027, an approximately 69% year-over-year increase.
