Meta Muse Hits 10 Million U.S. Downloads in 40 Days
- •Meta’s AI agent app Muse surpassed 10 million U.S. downloads within 40 days of launch.
- •Of 10.9 million downloads worldwide, 10.2 million came from the U.S.; Muse became only the 12th app to reach that launch milestone.
- •Muse retained 30% of U.S. users after 7 days and 23% after 14 days, above competing AI apps’ averages.
Meta’s AI agent app Muse surpassed 10 million downloads in the United States within 40 days of launch. Data released on the 20th, local time, by market research firm Sensor Tower showed that Muse, launched in September, recorded 10.9 million downloads worldwide, including 10.2 million in the U.S. Only 12 mobile apps have exceeded 10 million downloads within their first 40 days. Muse is the third non-game app to do so, after Disney+ and Meta’s Threads.
Sensor Tower senior insights analyst Kara Lee said that only 12 apps, including Muse, had achieved that milestone within 40 days. Most of the earlier apps were mobile games such as Fortnite, PUBG Mobile and Pokémon Go. The most recent non-game app before Muse was Threads in July 2023; Disney+ set the earlier record.
Sensor Tower attributed Muse’s growth in part to Meta’s service ecosystem and marketing. Meta’s platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, have a combined 3.6 billion daily active users, and the company has promoted Muse on those platforms while concentrating advertising spending on it. Muse accounted for 39% of Meta’s total advertising spend in October, up from 23% the previous month. Its U.S. brand ranking by advertising impressions rose from 73rd in September to 21st in October.
Muse’s user retention also exceeded the average for competing AI apps tracked by Sensor Tower. In the U.S., 30% of Muse users remained on day 7 after launch and 23% on day 14, compared with averages of 19% and 16% for competitors. Muse’s daily active users (DAU) first topped 2.5 million on the 16th, up 15% from the previous week. Since launch, it held the top spot for most of the time on the U.S. Apple App Store and ranked first on Google Play during the most recent 30 days. On the 19th, it briefly ceded the lead to streaming app Kick before regaining it.
During their first 40 days in the U.S., Muse recorded 10.2 million downloads, compared with 3.7 million for ChatGPT, 500,000 for Grok and 200,000 for Claude. Worldwide, ChatGPT had 15 million downloads over the same period, ahead of Muse’s 10.9 million. The apps are difficult to compare directly because they launched in different markets: Muse was available only in the U.S. and Canada, while ChatGPT gained early users in more markets, including Japan, Brazil and Germany. Japan accounted for 25% of ChatGPT’s worldwide downloads during its first 40 days.
