MIT Recommends Responsible AI Policy

MIT's AI use committee released a report in August 2026 recommending that the university adopt responsible AI practices across teaching, learning and research training. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology committee said educators should create "AI-aware" curricula, make decisions around people and community, disclose AI use and build continuing support structures. The report said MIT community members raised concerns about data centers' environmental costs, possible intellectual drain on students and inconsistent or unclear AI policy across the university.
The committee said MIT should not try to shield students from AI or preserve older educational forms simply because they are familiar. Its stated goal was to make AI use support students who can think critically, act with initiative, work productively with others and understand the consequences of choices in a world shared with nine billion other people. The report's 3 key recommendations were to create an "AI-aware" curriculum, center decisions on people and residential community, and build ongoing infrastructure for training, support and implementation.
The curriculum recommendation called for faculty to revisit course goals, publish AI use policies and consider assessments less vulnerable to AI, including oral exams and semester portfolios. The committee also recommended experiential and project-based learning, in-person labs and evaluation, group projects, in-class graded discussions, and more out-of-class research or paid learning experiences. It said departments could use AI-light or AI-heavy classes or pathways, but should be able to change courses rapidly and show whether those changes worked.
The MIT Ad Hoc Committee on AI Use in Teaching, Learning and Research Training was formed in January 2026 to assess institutional AI use, identify innovations in teaching and assessment, and propose an AI use policy. The group included faculty from every school and the college, undergraduate and graduate students, and staff. President Sally Kornbluth said in a Tuesday letter that AI will force MIT to make practical changes to its education model and reach a shared understanding of how AI should be used.
The report said AI is already being used in classrooms and research, and some instructors were considering AI agents as research assistants instead of employing students. The committee urged faculty to ask what students should know and what role grades should play, rather than ignoring AI or trying to make every assignment AI-proof. It emphasized competency-based and mastery-based assessments over traditional grading, while saying grade rationing like Harvard University's approach should not be MIT's path.
The committee discouraged AI detectors, citing the risk that writing by non-native English speakers or neurodivergent students could be wrongly labeled as AI-generated. It said students should acknowledge AI use in work, including theses and research, and instructors should follow the same AI guidelines as students by disclosing how they use the technology. The report also said MIT should acknowledge skepticism about AI, monitor its costs and environmental effects, and invest in programs with lower impacts.
MIT said instructors will soon receive guidance for creating AI policies to include in syllabi and post online. The university is also creating a central resource for AI tools and information for students and faculty, with more next steps expected in the fall. The committee recommended an ongoing AI and education committee, school or department AI leads, an AI implementation team, AI fellows and an AI pilot fund.
The broader higher education debate includes student concern and workforce pressure. Suffolk University faced backlash over creating a co-major in AI, and a petition to stop funding it received 1,500 signatures. A recent Pew Research poll found young adults in the U.S. are increasingly wary of AI and its effects, while a recent AAC&U report found 91% of employers think it is very or somewhat important that college graduates gain skills in college to use AI.
