Jensen Huang Sees Little Risk of Memory Glut by 2029
  • •Jensen Huang said a memory-chip supply glut is unlikely through 2029.
  • •He expects HBM use to continue for years and says LPDDR can double data-center energy efficiency.
  • •Huang welcomed cooperation with Chinese memory firms and said U.S. rules accelerated China’s efforts to build domestic chipmaking capacity.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told CNBC on the sidelines of the company’s GTC developer conference in Berlin, Germany, on the 22nd local time that a memory-chip supply glut is unlikely through 2029. He said memory is a resource that can always be used in greater quantities, and that Nvidia will continue using it abundantly.

Huang expects Nvidia to keep using high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for years. He said Nvidia was the first company in the world to apply low-power double data rate (LPDDR) memory in data centers, enabling performance with twice the energy efficiency. Nvidia plans to continue using LPDDR in large quantities.

Huang spoke as memory-related stocks fell last week amid concerns about slowing demand and oversupply. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said China would produce enormous quantities of RAM in 2028. A new design architecture announced by Chinese memory maker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) also heightened investor concerns.

Asked about potential cooperation with Chinese memory companies, Huang said Nvidia was open to it and was working with Chinese companies. He added that nearly every company in the global supply chain does business with Chinese companies. On U.S. export restrictions, he said they had accelerated China’s efforts to build domestic semiconductor manufacturing capabilities and support its industry.
