OpenAI Adds Teen Safety Controls and Study Features
- •OpenAI implemented age-prediction technology to apply mandatory safety safeguards for users under 18.
- •New parental controls allow management of image generation, Voice Mode, and alerts for high-risk activity.
- •Study Mode provides guided, step-by-step learning assistance for 18 million weekly active teen users.
OpenAI announced a series of safety updates on July 16, 2026, designed to create a more secure environment for teenagers using ChatGPT. Recognizing that nearly 90% of teens already utilize the platform weekly for educational and research purposes, the company implemented an automated age-prediction system. This tool adjusts the user experience for individuals identified as under 18, applying rigorous safeguards against harmful content, including graphic violence, self-harm, unhealthy body image, and risky viral challenges. If the system cannot verify a user's age, it defaults to the restricted teen experience.
Parental controls have been significantly expanded in this update. Parents can now manage specific account features, including the ability to disable Voice Mode, restrict access to image generation, and set Quiet Hours. Additionally, parents receive notifications in high-risk situations, such as when the system detects signs of potential self-harm. To foster educational engagement, OpenAI introduced a feature called Study Mode, which was developed in collaboration with teachers and learning experts. Instead of providing instant answers, this mode guides students through complex problems step by step. Parents can enable Study Mode as a default setting for their teen's account.
The educational suite also includes new starter prompts for schoolwork and interactive tools for math and science, which now support over 250 topics. According to OpenAI, these academic resources currently reach 18 million weekly users. By combining these proactive safety guardrails with pedagogical features, the company aims to ensure that teenagers can leverage AI technology for creativity and learning while minimizing exposure to digital risks.
