OpenAI announced its first hardware product, a programmable accessory dubbed Codex Micro, scheduled for release on July 15. The device is being developed in collaboration with Work Louder, a manufacturer recognized for specialized mechanical keyboards and macro pads used by developers and creative professionals. The company teased the accessory on X, describing it as an upgrade for Codex shortcuts, displaying a compact, square-shaped silhouette that includes multiple physical buttons.
Although OpenAI has not disclosed official specifications, the device appears similar to the existing Creator Micro 2 from Work Louder, which features mechanical keys, a joystick, and touch-sensitive inputs. These macro pads allow users to map custom commands and repetitive workflows to physical triggers, implying the Codex Micro will focus on optimizing AI-assisted software development tasks.
The Codex Micro is separate from the company's broader, long-rumoured consumer hardware initiative currently being developed with former Apple design lead Jony Ive. OpenAI’s Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane recently confirmed that this primary consumer hardware project remains on track for a release in the second half of 2026. Further details regarding the Codex Micro, including pricing and compatibility, are expected to be shared during the official launch on July 15.
