OpenAI said its enterprise business rebounded in the third quarter after a difficult first half in coding, following the launches of GPT-5.6 Sol and ChatGPT Work. The Wall Street Journal and Reuters reported on the 4th that Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s co-founder and president, made the remarks at the WSJ Tech Live conference in Napa, California. Brockman said enterprise customers account for more than half of OpenAI’s total revenue, making enterprise sales its largest revenue source, ahead of consumer sales.

Brockman acknowledged that OpenAI struggled in the first half as Anthropic moved ahead in winning enterprise customers. He said both the first and second quarters were difficult and that OpenAI was not even part of the conversation in coding; Codex existed, but no one was discussing it at the time. The situation changed completely in the third quarter, he said, with GPT-5.6 Sol and the workplace product ChatGPT Work providing a platform for the rebound. He added that agentic coding tools were beginning to attract enterprise customers’ attention.

Brockman said substantial work behind the scenes went into the product launches, resulting in a turning point in revenue. OpenAI is strengthening enterprise sales and promoting Codex agents to compete with Anthropic. OpenRouter’s September analysis found that the two companies had nearly equal shares of spending among about 120,000 businesses using OpenAI and Anthropic tools; Anthropic held about 75% at the start of the year.

JPMorgan Chase, identified as a major enterprise customer, recently formed a strategic partnership with OpenAI that includes access to cybersecurity models through the Daybreak program. JPMorgan also participates in Anthropic’s cybersecurity project Glasswing. Meanwhile, OpenAI raised less than half of its $30 billion target in its latest funding round, and its valuation came in at $1.25 trillion, below the $1.4 trillion target. The article attributed investor sentiment in part to market anxiety about the AI industry. OpenAI filed IPO paperwork in June but pushed its listing plans to next year. Asked whether the company might prepare for an IPO next year, Brockman replied, “It seems likely,” adding that he wants to go public at the right time and is confident about the progress made this year and the company’s work.
