OpenAI announced on May 29, 2026, the launch of Rosalind Biodefense, an initiative designed to provide vetted developers with access to GPT-Rosalind, a frontier reasoning model specifically engineered for life sciences research. The program aims to accelerate the creation of practical biodefense and pandemic preparedness tools, covering areas such as epidemiological modeling, early detection, screening, and non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs). Participants receive sponsored access and launch support to build defensive applications that strengthen societal resilience against biological threats, whether synthetic or naturally occurring.
Alongside the developer program, OpenAI is expanding trusted access to GPT-Rosalind for select U.S. government and allied partners. This effort enables public health and national security teams to utilize advanced AI for high-impact workflows including outbreak response planning, diagnostics, and medical countermeasure development. Key partners currently utilizing these capabilities include the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), which integrates AI with supercomputing and simulation to evaluate countermeasures. Additionally, the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory intends to use the model to enhance protein-engineering platforms for screening mutant enzymes. The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) has also gained access to the technology to support its 100 Days Mission, which focuses on accelerating vaccine development against pandemic threats like Ebola.
This initiative follows previous efforts to manage the risks associated with biology-focused AI. In July 2025, OpenAI introduced its first model classified as High Capability in biology, implementing safeguards for dual-use biological requests. The company continues to utilize layered resilience strategies, such as expert red teaming and bio-specific capability assessments, to ensure that frontier AI tools remain securely in the hands of authorized defenders. The Rosalind Biodefense Program is currently accepting applications from qualified organizations globally as part of a long-term effort to advance public health and biosecurity research.
