OpenAI Sets Up Midterm Election Operations Center
  • •OpenAI says its Election Operations Center will run from this week until all midterm votes are counted
  • •Hundreds of employees will monitor real-time events and reports of suspected tool misuse and platform-term violations
  • •The center will address concerns about misleading AI-generated images, audio and video ahead of next week’s elections

OpenAI told POLITICO that it is setting up an election “war room” ahead of the midterm elections. The Election Operations Center will begin operating this week and continue until all votes are counted. Hundreds of employees will work together to identify possible misinformation and other efforts to disrupt the elections, including suspected misuse of OpenAI tools such as ChatGPT. The center will monitor events in real time and handle reports of unexpected model behavior or suspected violations of the company’s platform terms.

Josh Lawson, OpenAI’s head of civic and strategic risk and the center’s lead, said the operation brings teams together to respond quickly to emerging issues and enforce company policies as voters head to the polls. He said it builds on years of work to provide users with reliable voting information, combat misuse of OpenAI’s tools, and support election defenders.

OpenAI’s announcement comes amid concerns that AI-generated misleading images, audio and video, along with misinformation, could distort next week’s midterm elections. The company is seeking to position itself as a defender of the democratic process while bad actors attempt to use AI tools from OpenAI and other companies to disrupt free and fair elections.
