  • •New working group will draft chatbot guidance for responding to possible suicide or self-harm risk, with public input later this year
  • •The partners join PAI’s network of more than 150 organizations across 19 countries

Partnership on AI (PAI) welcomed eight mental health and suicide prevention organizations on October 8, 2026, ahead of World Mental Health Day on October 10. The new partners are the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Child Mind Institute, Crisis Text Line, International Association for Suicide Prevention, Mental Health America, National Alliance for Eating Disorders, The Trevor Project, and Vibrant Emotional Health. PAI says their frontline and clinical experience will inform how AI systems are designed and governed as people increasingly turn to chatbots for help, connection, and care.

PAI is launching work on AI and psychological well-being within its AI, Human Connection, and Well-being focus area, part of its 2027–2031 strategic plan, Shared Stakes, Lasting Impact. The plan calls for responsible AI business practices that serve the public interest, with systems built with affected people and governed accountably, fairly, transparently, reliably, and securely.

The work’s central structure is the new AI and Psychological Well-being Working Group. It will bring together practitioners from AI companies with mental health and suicide prevention organizations, clinicians, researchers, and people with lived experience. The group’s first task is to develop practical guidance for how general-purpose AI chatbots should respond when a person may be at risk of suicide or self-harm; PAI expects to open a draft for public input later this year.

The eight organizations bring different forms of support and expertise. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention works on education, community programs, research, advocacy, and support, with chapters in all 50 states, D.C., and Puerto Rico. Child Mind Institute, founded in 2009, provides evidence-based care, educational resources, and research for children and families, reaching millions of families each year. Crisis Text Line offers free, confidential support in English and Spanish, 24/7, through text, and combines human support with AI technology and research.

Mental Health America works through education, research, advocacy, policy, and direct services, guided by people with lived experience. The National Alliance for Eating Disorders provides free support, education, referrals, and therapist-led services. The International Association for Suicide Prevention connects professionals, volunteers, and people with lived experience in around 80 countries and leads World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10. The Trevor Project provides 24/7 crisis counseling by phone, text, and chat for LGBTQ+ young people. Vibrant Emotional Health has worked for over 50 years and administers crisis services including the national 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, the Disaster Distress Helpline, and NYC 988.

The new partners join PAI’s global network of more than 150 organizations across 19 countries. PAI, marking its tenth anniversary, says it aims to move responsible AI from principle to practice across the value chain.
