Samsung Semiconductor Posts 106.5 Trillion Won in Q3 Operating Profit
  • •Samsung’s DS division reported Q3 revenue of 147.1 trillion won and operating profit of 106.5 trillion won.
  • •Memory revenue reached 140.7 trillion won as Samsung responded to demand for HBM4 and server SSDs.
  • •Samsung plans 84.4 trillion won in capital spending this year and expects next year’s memory shortage to worsen.

Samsung said its semiconductor-focused DS division generated 147.1 trillion won in revenue and 106.5 trillion won in operating profit in its third-quarter results announced on the 29th. Revenue rose 344% and operating profit 1,421% from a year earlier, setting records. Samsung’s total third-quarter revenue was 195.2532 trillion won, with operating profit of 107.4405 trillion won.

The memory business led results, with record revenue of 140.7 trillion won. Samsung said rising market prices in high-demand areas such as servers, expanded sales of sixth-generation high-bandwidth memory (HBM4), and increased demand for enterprise solid-state drives (eSSDs) contributed to performance.

System LSI revenue grew in the second half as new mobile system-on-chip (SoC) and sensor models entered the market. The division also established stable mass production for SoCs used in flagship products and 200-megapixel sensors. The foundry business grew sales of HBM base dies and began full-scale production of second-generation 2-nanometer mobile products and 4-nanometer neural processing units (NPUs).

Samsung expects infrastructure investment to continue in the fourth quarter as companies seek to gain ground in the AI market, and plans to strengthen operations around AI products. It expects memory demand for new GPU and CPU products to rise further and said it would increase the sales share of HBM, server DRAM and SSDs. The company forecasts strong memory-demand growth next year as the AI ecosystem expands and investment in AI server infrastructure continues, with shortages worsening compared with this year.

Samsung plans to spend 84.4 trillion won on facilities this year in preparation for strong AI demand and medium- to long-term growth. Of that amount, 76.8 trillion won is slated for the DS division and about 3.9 trillion won for displays. The memory business plans to expand infrastructure, including new fabrication plants, to meet AI demand and longer-term needs. The foundry business plans to invest around its Taylor, Texas, plant to address surging demand from AI and high-performance computing (HPC) customers. The headline cited 85 trillion won in capital spending next year, while the article body described 84.4 trillion won in facility spending planned for this year.
