Schreiner to Certify All Freshmen in AI
- •Schreiner University plans AI certification for all freshmen starting next fall under a federally funded initiative.

Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas, will certify all first-year students in artificial intelligence starting next fall under a $3.6 million federally funded program announced October 23. The private Presbyterian university also plans to use AI to advise students, according to the university.
The initiative, called “Building a Better Future,” will provide AI-supported advising, tutoring and timely outreach through a new Center for Academic Success. The center will focus on rural, first-generation and low-income students, while the broader program will expand advising services and the range of industry credentials students can earn.
Schreiner says AI certifications will be available to all 1,500 students, and faculty and staff will have access to AI-focused professional development. The university also plans to use AI to expand dual-credit offerings for high school students with learning differences, including dyslexia. Schreiner did not respond to a request for more details about the planned programs. President Charlie McCormick said the investment is intended to connect students’ career skills with the university’s personal attention and expand opportunities for students and communities.
The program comes as other San Antonio-area colleges expand AI education. The University of Texas at San Antonio launched its College of AI, Cyber and Computing last year and unveiled a second downtown building for the program in April. The building cost $131 million, with a $25 million development scheduled for completion in the summer; the college has 5,300 students. Texas A&M University-San Antonio announced its Jag-AI initiative in 2023, using National Science Foundation funding to include AI in research and expand access to courses. It awards AI certificates to computer science students who complete three courses and is preparing an AI minor. The A&M System says it aims to teach every Aggie to use AI by 2030. Last year, San Antonio College in the Alamo Colleges District launched an online associate degree in data science and AI. The World Economic Forum projects that AI will eliminate 92 million jobs and create 170 million by 2030.
