Nearly 500 participants gathered at the Singapore Management University’s Yong Pung How School of Law on May 13 to attend the SGLaw200 Youth Forum, an event marking 200 years of the nation’s legal and judicial system. The forum brought together government leaders, policy experts, and students to discuss the evolution of the Rule of Law and the necessity of adapting legal frameworks to contemporary challenges, including artificial intelligence regulation and online harms. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong delivered the keynote address, urging the younger generation to actively participate in refining and strengthening Singapore's legal institutions to ensure they remain relevant.

The event concluded with the inaugural MinLaw Ideation Challenge, an initiative organized by the Ministry of Law that invited students from six autonomous universities and Temasek Polytechnic to propose solutions for legal and regulatory issues. Winning entries included an AI-powered legal services portal, a reimagined fintech regulatory sandbox, and a proposal allowing citizens to utilize their Central Provident Fund Ordinary Account to subsidize essential legal costs.

Law Minister Edwin Tong emphasized the importance of maintaining a responsive justice system, citing the Online Safety (Relief and Accountability) Act (OSRAA) as a key development. Passed in 2025, the legislation creates mechanisms to protect victims of online harms, with the Online Safety Commission scheduled to commence operations on June 29. The Ministry of Law plans to continue anniversary celebrations with a roving exhibition visiting public hubs and a heritage trail featuring guided tours of significant legal landmarks.
